Elf on the Shelf

I wasn’t planning on doing this post today, but I was sick last week on Tuesday and the power was out most of the day on Wednesday and I just didn’t get my act together for the rest of the week. So, here we are…

Do you do this fun tradition with your kids? I’ve heard different things about it from everyone. Some love it, some don’t, some say it’s too much work to do during a busy holiday month, some say it’s not. Well, last year I decided to buy the book and elf set when it was on clearance after Christmas and we’ve been having fun with it. My husband even got the movie for the boys to watch.

So, last Sunday, Dec. 1st, we watched the movie as a family and then over dinner the boys named our cute little elf. We got a girl and they decided on the name Eva. Why Eva? Well, my 3 year old LOVES the movie Wall-E. I watched it with him about a month ago and ever since he talks about “Wadeee” and “Eva” all the time. He has a Wall-E shirt and it’s one of his favs!

We were all saying names that we liked, my husband saying funny ones like Stinky-Pants, which I think was in the movie? I kind of fell asleep half way through it. Ooops! 🙂 And I think he mentioned Fart Face Jones. He also said one that I really liked, Vanilla Bean, but when Tinian said Wall-E the boys decided on the next best name, since we have a girl elf, and that was Eva. (Yes, I know the robots real name is Eve, but since Wall-E calls her Eva, that’s what Tinian calls her and therefore we got the name of our elf on the shelf.)

The boys went to bed that night excited to wake up and see where Eva would be waiting for them. She has made the rounds in our house and it has been a fun adventure for the boys to find her every morning. She hasn’t done anything naughty yet, I’m not sure she will. I just like the idea of it being a fun thing for them to do.

One morning this past week Tini was sitting in time out and I noticed he got real quiet, he never sits quietly in timeout!! When I went in the room he had a teeny little smile on his face and he pointed to the couch. He had found Eva! 🙂 I think it made him really happy that he found her first. That doesn’t happen a lot for the youngest kid in the house.

Here are a few of the places she’s been:

Of course she just had to get in a little video game time while she’s here! 🙂 Silly Eva!

And, since the girl elf doesn’t come with a skirt my husband found an easy tutorial on how to make your own out of felt. It literally took about 5 minutes, from start to finish. Mark cut out the shape of a CD for the skirt and then cut out a smaller one for the middle around her waist. I stitched red thread along the edge on the bottom of the skirt with a fancy stitch that looked like snowflakes. Then Mark tied a little bow out of yarn and I hot glued it onto the top of the skirt. Lastly, I cut a piece of velcro in half and sewed it onto the back of the skirt opening.

I think it turned out really cute and it’s a plus that it was so easy to make!

Do you do this tradition with your kids? Do you have a naughty or a good elf? I’d love for you to share a link in the comments.

Thanks for stopping by! Have a great Monday!

  1. We don’t have an elf, but we have 3 wise men and a shepherd who wander around the house searching for the newborn king. I always love reading these kinds of posts to get ideas! 🙂

    1. Eliz, That is such a great idea!! And it brings the real spirit of Christmas into the house. I might use your idea next year, if you don’t mind:)
